opening night

a few hours of shoveling heavy wet snow yesterday made friday’s opening in Greenwich seem almost like a distant memory. almost.

Peter Anton’s ice cream bars greeted guests. pastels by Sonya Fairbanks on the far wall to the right.

the turnout was great- though the snowdate meant that some the artists travelling to attend couldn’t make it.

here, i’m muggin in front of Jeff Vespa’s amazing hamburger photos with Jeff and watercolorist Abbie J Zuidema. also enjoyed meeting painter Andrea Kantrowitz.

next morning, we were invited to check out the nearby Wilton, Ct Village Market for a different ’show’ of sorts

we’d heard that the owners were frequent shoppers this past summer at the Charlestown Gallery, but it was still a treat to come upon my paintings in the aisles-

seeing the ribeye in the meat department made me grin ear to ear.

it’s a great little market – in RI, the equivalent would be Dave’s or the Eastside Marketplaces.
in the neighborhood?

many, many thanks to Barbara Richards and the flinn gallery; Cindy & Peter Keating; and Renee & Gilly

thank you!

pb&j

peanut butter, 8×8in, acrylic on panel

when the flinn gallery approached me for the food…glorious food show, they basically (in so many words) said “we’ve got plenty of fruits & veggies, we want the other stuff.”

the tricky part about the other stuff – packaged goods like these pb&j jars – is that they’re immediately recognizable. there’s room for a bit of ‘artistic’ leeway in the funky organic forms of peppers and the like – but here, if any of the familiar colors or shapes are off, the finished works look odd.

still – for me the food paintings are, above all, about creating a believable space, not about photographic reproduction.

so, when i approach this type of subject, it’s not about getting the labels exact – it’s about getting them close enough that, in the words of my former professor Barry Moser, “they don’t interrupt the viewer’s fictional dream.”

cheeeese!

blue cheese, 6×6in, acrylic on panel

this gorgeous blue (Fourme d’Ambert from Auvergne, France – soooo good it had us goin “Sacrebleu!”) came from the fine folks at Farmstead. owner Matt Jennings enthusiastically directed me to some gems when i came in a-lookin for some painting subjects last week.

Piave vecchio, 4×6in, acrylic on panel

both pieces are part of 26 we brought down to the flinn gallery in a mad-dash-before-the-ice-storm trip yesterday.

looking to grab some grub before the trip home, we were told to check out the Ginger Man. it was the perfect antidote to the december chill – great comfort/pub food, a roaring fireplace, and a ridiculous number of beers (had a Hitachino Nest Ginger Ale – great beer, great label-)

it was our maiden voyage to Greenwich – and there looked to be a ton o dining options in the area – but if you decide to make the trek to the show, it’s just around the corner & worth a stop.

making spirits bright.

bourbon whisky, 7×12in, acrylic on panel

the weather outside is finally frightful, so the visitor to our open studio this past weekend shouldn’t've been such a surprise.

the Jolly Old Elf, standing in front of works reserved for the Flinn Gallery show next week, pointed out both the bourbon whisky and oatmeal as excellent options should you choose to provide a little something to keep him warm on Christmas Eve.
