Harvest Moon

Moonrise (study), 18 x 22in, Charcoal sold

Come a little bit closer/Hear what I have to say/Just like children sleepin/We could dream this night away.
But theres a full moon risin/Lets go dancin in the light/We know where the musics playin/Lets go out and feel the night.

Thanks, Neil. tonight’s the Harvest Moon.

the study above was part of a show at the Providence Art Club earlier this year, one of many that will eventually become a series of paintings.

This calendar page is one of my earliest influences (’77, not yet 6, just before the tidal wave of Star Wars.) Every night, staring at glowing image on the wall above my bed, I dreamed of climbing inside and getting lost.

And still do. The charcoals (including Moonrise) are an attempt to create that place.

What about the food paintings?

They might not seem connected, little food studies have been a way back into being able to make that place with paint, when in the past i’ve only felt confident with charcoal.

Right…how do ya end a post about the Harvest Moon, charcoal cows, Neil Young, and some pets going to the moon in a rocket? with a Mark Rothko quote, of course -

“They are not pictures. I have made a place”

sliced tomato, Open Studios recap

FINALLY getting around to the open studio recap – many thanks again if you chose to come by to wilt with us on what was prob’ly the last real beach weekend of the year – esp. if you drove down from boston or up from south county!

In spite of the heat, the response to all the new work was fantastic. Sliced tomato was one of the newer (slightly larger) formats i’d been saving for the event.

sliced tomato, 7×12in, acrylic on panel sold

A personal highlight – a visit from former professor (and mentor) Thomas Sgouros. His work, and words, have been a tremendous gentle influence on countless RISD grads – including Caldecott Medal winners David Macaulay, Chris Van Allsburg, and David Wiesner.
(the latter 2 will be at the RI Festival of Children’s Books in a few weeks – link here.)

thank you!

Dexter Street, a little more than a mile away in Central Falls, is the home of Stanley’s Famous Hamburgers (RI institution since ‘32) as well as a ton o’ Latin American restaurants (inc. great mexican at Taqueria Lupita)
At Mineral Spring Ave & Charles St – Pinelli’s North End Cafe. About a mile down from the Mineral Spring/Smithfield Ave intersection (heading to Providence) – Chelo’s.

oops – almost forgot. KILLER vietnamese food- Pho Horn’s. bout 1-2 miles away in the Shaws plaza on Main st (leave the studio, make a rt onto Lonsdale, which becomes Main st.)
